Supporting education

 

Ralph Nelson was a graduate of Ottawa Township High School, attending from 1949 to 1953. He received a scholarship to play football at the University of Illinois where graduated in 1957. He was a dedicated educator from 1961 to 1991, first working as a teacher and coach for OTHS and then as school principal. He believed that education was the door to opportunity.

He is survived by his wife, Ellen, and 3 children, Joellyn, Scott and Steve, all graduates of OTHS.

Mentorship

Ralph believe that education was of the utmost importance and made sure to provide mentorship and support to all.

Loyalty

Ralph had many lifelong friends, including many of his fellow educators and coaches. He was always present and encouraging to his friends, colleagues, athletes, students and family.

Respect

Ralph earned the moniker “Tuffy Nelson” in his neighborhood as a child because of his willingness to stand up for others. He was known as kind but tough, holding everyone accountable.

Compassion

Ralph had great compassion for everyone. He was a kind and loving man that could always be relied on for support and kindness.
